Lisbon

Written by WLE

The capital of Portugal is one of the oldest cities in the world. If you're lucky enough to head there, here are a few of our favorite spots, between must-sees and hidden gems.

FOOD & DRINKS

FOR THE DRINKS & ATMOSPHERE

There’s nothing quite like sipping a drink with the sky above and Lisbon’s rooftops all around you. It’s no wonder rooftop bars and restaurants are a staple of the city’s vibrant lifestyle. Here are a few of our favorite spots:

With its sea views, Mediterranean menu, relaxed atmosphere, and lovely selection of local and natural wines, Javá Rooftop captures the flavors of Portugal with style and ease.

Located in Belém, the Icon Bar & Rooftop crowns the Hyatt Regency hotel, offering sweeping views of the Tagus River and its iconic red bridge. Go on a Thursday (with a reservation!) for sunset cocktails and live DJ sets—best enjoyed with their signature champagne drink in hand.

In the mood for a pre-dinner cocktail with a view? Book a table at Lumi, an inviting rooftop oasis where plush seating, soft light, and a touch of shade make for the perfect golden hour hangout.

V Rooftop Bar: Just steps from the Botanical Garden, this cozy rooftop retreat welcomes you with warm wood tones and intimate vibes. Come to unwind—and stay for the refined, imaginative cocktails.

Back at street level, Black Sheep Lisboa is a local favorite in the heart of the city. Dedicated to showcasing the very best wines from small independent producers, it’s a must for fans of local, organic, natural, and biodynamic vintages.

For a gastronomic night out, head to Mini Bar, where celebrated chef José Avillez curates a playful tasting menu paired with craft cocktails, wines, and beers. From Wednesday to Saturday, the venue comes alive with music, transforming into an intimate, electric club after dark.

FOR A DELICIOUS MEAL

A bohemian soul with Lisbon flair—BAHR describes itself as sophisticated, a little irreverent, and deeply rooted in its surroundings. Chef Bruno Rocha serves contemporary cuisine inspired by Portuguese tradition, with a seasonal menu that intrigues as much as it delights.

Located in the nighborhood of Principe Real, BouBou’s is the Michelin-starred restuarant of Top Chef France's winner Louise Bourrat. The gastronomic menu focuses on international cuisine and offers vegan options, all set in a lively and luminous decor.

A Lisbon brunch staple, Dear Breakfast charms with its creamy palette, minimalist decor, and gentle morning ambiance. Enjoy poached eggs, avocado toast, fluffy pancakes, and specialty coffee in one of its several city locations—perfectly placed to start your day of exploring.

Tucked away from the tourist bustle, Breakfast Lovers is an hidden gem that blends cozy Scandinavian vibes with a brunch menu that’s both comforting and indulgent. Think eggs Benedict, homemade granola, fresh smoothies, and perfectly poured flat whites. A peaceful spot to linger with a book or a good conversation.

Looking to sample the best of Portuguese cuisine in one place? Head to Time Out Market, where top chefs, local artisans, and elevated street food stands share the same roof. From pasteis de nata to creative fusion dishes, this lively market is made for group tastings. Tip: arrive early!

O velho Eurico: This modern tavern in the winding streets of Alfama reimagines Portuguese comfort food with humor and heart. The setting is raw, the portions generous, and the atmosphere electric. Try the salt cod croquettes, clam rice, or grilled chorizo. A local favorite—reservations are a good idea.

Escape the city buzz and cross the river to Atira-te ao Rio. Bohemian charm meets one of the best sunset views over Lisbon. Set right on the water in Cacilhas, this eclectic seafood spot offers a laid-back setting and coastal cuisine. Perfect for late afternoons with your toes in the sand and a glass of vinho verde in hand.

More than just a beach club, Praia Irmão feels like a dream between dunes and ocean. Mediterranean dishes, curated cocktails, and a stellar music program invite you to stay from lunch until the last ray of sun. Set on the sands of S. João beach, the vibe is chic yet relaxed—ideal for seaside dining or a long, golden-hour apéro.

FOR A COFFEE (AND SWEET) BREAK

Sweeping views of Lisbon, plush armchairs, and golden light set the scene at Cafe da Garagem, a hidden gem just a few streets from Alfama’s tourist core. Here, coffee comes with a slice of homemade cake and a moment of stillness—a quiet pause with a view.

No visit to Lisbon is complete without tasting its most iconic treat: the pastel de nata. While the originals in Belém are classic, we swear by the ones from Manteigaria. This beloved Portuguese bakery chain is known for its quality and consistency—and with multiple locations across the city, one is bound to cross your path.

We love the calm, cool atmosphere of The Folks, a local café chain with six stylish locations across Lisbon. Whether you’re a visitor or a regular, it’s the perfect spot to start your morning with a specialty brew. A refined sanctuary for lovers of authentic flavor and understated elegance.

MUST-SEE (AND DO)

TYPICAL

In Lisbon, history surrounds you at every turn. Start in Alfama—the city’s oldest neighborhood—where winding alleys, artisanal shops, and local cafés invite you to slow down. Climb aboard the historic tram line that cuts through its hills, all the way up to São Jorge Castle (Castelo de São Jorge), the fortress that watches over the city. Step into the grandeur of the Jerónimos Monastery (Mosteiro dos Jerónimos), a UNESCO World Heritage site, or discover the art and heritage of Portuguese tiles at the National Azulejo Museum.
In the evening, let yourself be moved by the soulful sounds of fado at iconic venues like A Baiuca or Casa de Linhares. And no visit is complete without taking in the views from Lisbon’s scenic miradouros (viewpoints). From Graça and Senhora do Monte to São Pedro de Alcântara, each one offers a different perspective on the city’s timeless charm.

FOR SHOPPING

Stroll down Avenida da Liberdade, Lisbon’s grand, tree-lined boulevard where international fashion houses sit side by side with refined Portuguese designers in elegant, softly lit boutiques.

For something more intimate and curated, head to Príncipe Real, a neighborhood that celebrates design and individuality. Its main street is lined with concept stores and labels—both local and international—dedicated to craftsmanship and originality.

Just a few tram stops away, LX Factory offers a completely different vibe. Set in a reimagined industrial zone, this creative hub is home to ateliers, galleries, and one-of-a-kind shops. A true haven for those who love to browse and uncover rare, refined finds.

SLEEP

FOR A PERFECT NIGHT

Treat yourself to an unforgettable night at Verride Palácio de Santa Catarina, an 18th-century palace turned exquisite boutique hotel in Chiado. Inside, the rooftop Suba restaurant and bar—along with a pool—offer sweeping river views in a setting that blends old-world charm with understated luxury.

In the adjacent neighborhood, the Bairro Alto Hotel (Bairro Alto / Chiado) is a Lisbon institution. Housed in a reimagined historic residence by architect Souto de Moura, its rooftop terrace overlooking the Tagus is a tranquil escape in the heart of Lisbon’s buzzing nightlife.

Art lovers will be drawn to MACAM Hotel in Alcântara—part museum, part luxury hotel. Set in a restored 18th-century palace, MACAM immerses guests in a world where contemporary art meets heritage. With a rooftop pool, rotating exhibitions, and a chapel bar, it’s a cultural experience in its own right.

In central Lisbon, The Ivens is discreet from the outside—but step inside and you’re transported into a hushed, elegant world, hidden from the city’s lively rhythm. In charming São Bento, The Verse welcomes guests with its airy, natural decor and intimate atmosphere. A true home away from home.
